More than 20 years ago, the City of Folsom made a visionary investment in its future by voting to annex 3,500 acres along its southern border. After years of careful planning, that land – now known as Folsom Ranch – has evolved into a vibrant community featuring over 1,000 acres of open space, 138 acres of community parks, upgraded transit infrastructure, a new town center, residential neighborhoods, and schools.
Folsom Fire Station 34 is the sixth fire station serving the city and the first located within the Folsom Ranch development. Strategically sited for rapid emergency response, the station occupies half of a 3-acre parcel, reserving the remaining 1.5 acres for future expansion. The facility also includes a dedicated office space for patrolling police officers, integrating public safety services in one location.
Folsom Fire Station 39 is designed in a fire-resistant Craftsman style with metal-clad gable roofs, broad overhangs and exposed bracing.
High-volume, low-speed ceiling fans are mounted throughout the
facility.
Primarily a single-story structure with an unfinished second floor designed for future dormitory expansion, the station spans approximately 12,195 square feet. It features three oversized apparatus bays capable of housing multiple fire engines, a fire truck, and an ambulance. The facility currently includes six single-occupancy dorm rooms, with the capacity to expand to 12 as staffing needs grow. Additional amenities include a fitness center, living quarters, administrative offices, a police substation, and public-facing areas.
Designed in the Craftsman architectural style, Station 34 features gabled roofs with broad overhangs and exposed bracing, harmonizing with the surrounding residential neighborhood and adjacent future city park. Horizontal metal siding and manufactured stone veneer create a residential scale appearance while ensuring long-term durability and low maintenance. Exposed framing and metal roofing reflect traditional Craftsman design elements.
The station site is sustainably landscaped with drought tolerant plants and bio-swales for stormwater management. All vehicular surfaces are paved in concrete to support the heavy demands of fire apparatus. An ornamental iron fence secures the site while maintaining visual openness for the surrounding community.
Inside, functionality and durability were prioritized. The centrally located Apparatus Room – sized for up to six vehicles – enables rapid deployment. Office and living areas are positioned on one side, with dormitory space on the other, optimizing workflow. Bi-fold doors allow quick and safe apparatus exits.
Interior finishes include polished concrete floors throughout and aluminum diamond plate wainscoting in the Apparatus Room. Radiant hydronic heating within the insulated slab ensures comfort, while ductless mini-split HVAC units offer individual climate control in each dorm room. Operable windows and high-volume, low-speed ceiling fans throughout the building provide ventilation options. Covered exterior patios adjacent to the dayroom and exercise room take advantage of Folsom’s temperate climate.
Station 34 was warmly welcomed by the community during its public open house and now proudly serves its district. The new facility continues the Folsom Fire Department’s long-standing tradition of service, which dates back to the city’s founding during California’s Gold Rush era and the establishment of the Folsom Volunteer Fire Department.
