Dodge Momentum Index Climbs in July

by Design Cost Data

The Dodge Momentum Index (DMI) rose 6.9% in July to 291.7, signaling continued strength in future nonresidential construction activity. Commercial planning increased 4.1%, while institutional planning jumped 13.1%, according to Dodge Construction Network.

Growth was fueled by renewed data center planning and broad gains across education, healthcare, recreation, religious and public building projects. Office, warehouse, retail and hotel planning, however, slowed during the month.

Compared with July 2025, the DMI was up 11.7%, with commercial planning increasing 13.8% and institutional planning rising 7.6%. Dodge noted that without the surge in data center projects, commercial planning would be down year over year.

The DMI tracks nonresidential projects entering the planning stage and typically leads construction spending by 12 to 18 months.
