Since 1925, Mowery Construction, a general contractor based in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, has completed over 2,500 projects, including warehouse and distribution centers. One of their recent accomplishments includes a million plus square-foot distribution center in Greencastle, Pennsylvania.
Mowery has identified high-volume, low-speed (HVLS) fans as a transformative solution for warehouse environments. HVLS fans are a powerful and effective way to improve energy efficiency and occupant comfort. “These fans are super quiet and operate at a low speed without generating noise. Their large blades easily move significant volumes of air,” explains William Sutton of Mowery. “By circulating large volumes of air at low speeds, HVLS fans evenly distribute conditioned air throughout a space, reducing temperature stratification and easing the load on HVAC systems.”
One of the key advantages of HVLS fans is their ability to enhance comfort in all seasons. In the summer, they create a cooling effect by improving air circulation; while in the winter, they push warm air trapped near the ceiling back down to the floor. This reduces energy consumption, promotes consistent indoor conditions, and improves worker comfort. Integrated with modern HVAC systems, HVLS fans optimize the indoor environment — supporting both productivity and sustainability goals.
HVLS fans also deliver substantial energy savings. “These fans can reduce energy costs by 15-30% for cooling in the summer and heating in the winter through destratification (bringing the warm air back down),” notes Sutton. During warmer months, HVLS fans lower the perceived temperature by up to 15 degrees with their cooling breeze. In colder months, running the fans in reverse redistributes warm air from the ceiling to the floor, maintaining consistent temperatures throughout the space while reducing heating costs.
Depending on the size of the warehouse, Mowery typically installs 5 to 10 HVLS fans. For example, they recently installed six fans for XPO Logistics. “We generally use brands like Big Ass Fans, MacroAir, Rite-Hite, Epic, and Serco because of their reliability and performance,” says Sutton. “When selecting HVLS fans, we prioritize high-quality equipment designed to operate continuously for years.”
