San Diego Airport First Floor Restroom Remodel

by JXR Constructors, Inc.

The San Diego County Regional Airport Authority awarded JXR Constructors, Inc. the Terminal 2 West Restroom Remodel Project. The project involved two large men’s and women’s restrooms and an all gender restroom. Work was broken out into two phases.

The initial challenge was making sure that no passengers would be affected through construction. The restrooms were in a high visibility area and were overdue for a makeover. After working on a previous set of restrooms, Atkins Global’s lead architect made more design adjustments to make these restrooms truly the best the airport had to offer.

Due to the high traffic location of the restrooms within the airport, the work was scheduled to be performed from 8pm to 5am to reduce impact to passengers and operations. Additional challenges included airport security and accessing secure areas to connect utilities.

Prior to commencing work, metal containment walls were fabricated and installed to separate the public from the work area. JXR Constructors, Inc. teamed up with McCain wall manufacturers to build the temporary aluminum walls. The airport personnel were so impressed with the walls that they started using them on subsequent projects.

Direct work in each phase involved complete interior demolition. Remodel began with rough-in of new HVAC duct and, concurrently, the installation of structural steel support for the sinks and countertops. After HVAC duct was installed, the ceiling was ready for framing and drywall. The next step was rough-in for new plumbing and electrical conduit. This was followed by new wall framing, drywall, and insulation. After that, drywall was installed on the ceilings and walls. The desired wall tile patterns were then installed.

Wall and floor tile activities took five weeks for each restroom. The large 2’× 2′ white and black composite floor tiles went in faster. After the tile, the countertops, toilet partitions and accessories were installed; plumbing finishes, lighting fixtures, and new HVAC grilles followed.

Work on each phase was completed and accepted by the Airport Authority prior to beginning the next phase. The project was completed on schedule, within budget, and with zero accidents reported.
