New Modern Belmont Skating Rink and Athletic Facility Now Open

Skanska, a leading global construction and development firm, has announced the substantial completion of the new 40,300-square-foot Belmont Skating Rink and Athletic Facility in Belmont, Massachusetts. The modern complex stands on the site of the former Viglirolo Skating Rink, which was demolished to make way for the upgraded venue.

“Skanska’s team provided construction expertise in a professional manner to navigate the twists and turns that come up during this type of project and were able to align their trade partners to focus on the Town’s vision and goals,” said Mark Haley, Chair of the Building Committee.

“The Viglirolo Skating Rink has long been a focal point of the Belmont hockey community, and we’re honored to support its revitalization through the new Skip Viglirolo Rink,” said Bryan Northrop, Executive Vice President and General Manager for Skanska USA Building’s New England Region. “We’re proud to have delivered a modern, sustainable facility that will serve future generations of athletes and residents—a testament to our team’s expertise in creating state-of-the-art athletic facilities across New England.”

Design Principal Ted Galante of The Galante Architecture Studio echoed that pride. “We were thrilled to design a state-of-the-art, fossil-fuel-free, CO₂-driven ice plant and to cover much of the building with solar panels. Our goal is to create sustainable buildings built for longevity, and the Town of Belmont had the foresight to make it possible.”

Designed by The Galante Architecture Studio, the new rink provides Belmont with an energy-efficient, year-round venue for youth and high school hockey, figure skating, and community recreation. The project reflects the town’s long-term commitment to sustainability and high-quality public facilities.

The scope included construction of a new 40,300-square-foot steel-framed, pre-engineered metal building housing a regulation 200-by-85-foot ice sheet. The fossil-free facility incorporates four high school team locker rooms, four additional dressing rooms, public restrooms, bleacher seating, and a concession area. Skanska also installed rooftop PV solar panels and a heat-pump refrigeration system to maintain ideal ice conditions. Energy-recovery systems further enhance efficiency across interior spaces.

The Belmont Skating Rink adds to Skanska’s strong portfolio of athletic facilities in New England, including Deerfield Academy’s athletic complex, Boston College’s Margot Connell Recreation Center, and technology upgrades at Northeastern University’s Matthews Arena.

Skanska partnered closely with the Town of Belmont to deliver the project safely and on schedule throughout the 18-month construction period, which began in October 2023.
