Efficient Resolution of Construction Disputes
Alternative Dispute Resolution
By Arthur F. O’Leary, FAIA, MRIAI
Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) refers to the various private voluntary
dispute resolution methods available to us in addition to the state-provided
court system. Most are a practical, usually faster and less expensive,
alternative to the usual court litigation.
The public courts of justice are open to all citizens who
wish to use them. Court costs are nominal but the procedures are so ponderous
and time consuming that legal fees and related costs can easily get out of hand.
Court backlogs have become prodigious, running from several months up to five
years.

New Animal Nutrition Center Promotes Animal Conservation, Sustainable Design
With its high profile green roof and other sustainable
design features, St. Louis Zoo’s new Orthwein Animal Nutrition Center serves as
one of the first non-animal exhibits in the zoo’s history.
The St. Louis Zoo has made its new animal nutrition center,
typically a back-of-house facility at most zoos, a major component of its public
exhibit. In addition, the zoo’s new Orthwein Animal Nutrition Center (OANC)
educates and informs visitors not only of the importance of plant material and
nutrition for animals and animal conservation, but also serves as a high profile
showcase for sustainable design.

Oak Park Public Works Building Striving for LEED Silver
There are always unexpected challenges when designing buildings. Oftentimes the
wants and needs of the owner change, and one project transforms into another
that is completely different, full of its own new challenges. In the case of the
Village of Oak Park Public Works building, plans changed overnight due to a
devastating fire that destroyed the existing facility. The project changed from
the renovation of and addition to the existing buildings to starting fresh by
designing one large facility that would encompass all the needs of Oak Park,
with an appearance that fit in the historic community. Holabird & Root was ready
for the challenge.

Cost Trends
Construction Cost Trends for 2008
Housing continues its slide. The strong performances by the public works and
commercial building industries are continuing but now, in the face of a definite
credit crunch, their ability to withstand the massive downturn in housing
(almost 30%) remains to be seen. Lodging, office and educational construction
spending have been growing at a brisk clip, up from 15 to 45%, but now with the
credit markets in crisis, office and lodging may be the next casualties.
