The Mobile, Alabama Public Safety Complex, designed by John Dendy &
Associates, Architects, was constructed in response to the City of
Mobile's expansion towards the Regional Airport. The public safety super
station includes Police Precinct No. 5 and the Fire & Rescue Station.
The air space cone of the Regional Airport's runway dictated the
building's location and height. The architect situated the new complex
on 3.5 acres. The site gently slopes 6 feet across to the west to meet
the airport property.
During design the color selection became a major issue, as the initial
concept was a light color as part of the energy design. However, with
the building location near the airport runway approach the selection
needed to be a dark non-reflective color. The architect chose a standing
seam metal roof by McElroy Roofing. Bradco Supply of Pensacola, Fla. who
also provided technical support including wind load detailing and
material coordination supplied the roof.
The complex is subdivided into four distinct areas: the Police Precinct,
common public spaces, the Fire and Rescue Department, and the Truck
Bay/Garage. The center includes an on-site power generation facility
giving the complex the ability to serve as a shelter and emergency
operations center in the event of a hurricane or disaster. The design
and construction also had to meet very strict environment standards as
City vehicles are fueled on-site.
The Public Safety Complex is a secured, fully digital facility,
completely connected to the City data and communications network, and
will serve as a link of the Public Safety transition into the 21st
Century.
